Octavian Tanase

Keynote

Octavian Tanase is the senior vice president of NetApp’s Data ONTAP operating system group. Previously Octavian was the GM of the Cloud Appliance – AltaVault, Group which built the fabric to enable enterprises to operate in hybrid cloud environment to send their backups and archives to the cloud. Octavian started at NetApp as the vice president of the Data Protection engineering team who shipped world-class data protection products such as SnapMirror, MetroCulster, SnapVault.

Before joining NetApp in 2010, Octavian led the Java Platform engineering group at Sun Microsystems/Oracle. He has also held various engineering roles in several start-ups in Silicon Valley.

Keith Aasen

Fabric Pool in the Real World

Keith has a BSc in Computer Science from the University of Calgary where he also studied Electrical Engineering. A 9 year veteran at NetApp, Keith is now a Solution Architect for Canada, the Chair of the Virtualization Expert Team and a CTO Ambassador. In this role the bulk of his time is spent working with customers and briefing them on NetApp’s short term and long term technical strategies as well as assisting with complex customer opportunities.

Jeff Baxter is the Chief Evangelist for NetApp’s ONTAP Software & Systems Group. Jeff’s goal is to drive excitement about how the industry-leading ONTAP portfolio solves customer challenges today, while also providing a compelling vision of forward-looking innovation.

Previously, Jeff was in the NetApp Field organization, including serving as Chief Technology Officer for the Americas at NetApp.

Michael Peppers is a technical engineer (TE) with a focus on SAN, FlexArray/V-Series, and Performance in ONTAP. His TME mission is to broaden and deepen the SAN, FlexArray & performance knowledge of customers, partners, and coworkers, and increase the scope of NetApp's SAN & FlexArray solutions. Prior to becoming a TME Mike tested ONTAP SAN Interoperability clustered ONTAP and before that was an Escalations Engineer in the NetApp Technical Support Center and as a NetApp customer and storage administrator.

Arun Prasad Raman is a Senior Product Manager in ONTAP Product Management Group responsible for FabricPool feature. He has been with NetApp for 13+ years handling various other successful products like MetroCluster, OnCommand, SnapDrive and NetCache. Recently moved to Vancouver with his family from NetApp HQ, California and slowly adjusting to the less sunny climate. He can be contacted through araman@netapp.com.

Ransomware: A Growing Threat to Enterprise Data

Bryan has been in the IT industry for over 20 years starting out with Microsoft solutions, moving to virtualization, and then into storage. Before joining NetApp, he spent several years as a storage engineer in two of the world's largest SAN environments: JPMorganChase and Wells Fargo. These environments have provided Bryan with "real world" experience, at scale, allowing him to truly understand customer perspective and needs.

As a senior solutions architect, Bryan focuses on data security, manageability & automation, and MetroCuster, solutions. Bryan holds multiple certifications including (ISC)2 CISSP and NetApp NCDA.

Dedicating Performance for Business-Critical Workloads in Shared Infrastructures Using QoS
Michael Peppers - Technical Engineer

Workload consolidation in shared-storage infrastructures is an accelerating trend to achieve CapEx and OpEx savings. This is even more pronounced in flash-based storage systems. However, customers can’t compromise on performance they had with dedicated storage. Maximum and minimum QoS thresholds enable you to dedicate performance levels to any storage object (Vol/LUN) in the shared cluster, thereby reaping the economic benefits of consolidation with no loss of performance for critical workloads. In addition, Adaptive QoS simplifies guaranteeing performance by setting up multiple performance profiles that can be assigned to different customer workloads. Service providers, will find adaptive QoS especially useful as a simplified method of defining differentiated service classes. This session will look at how QoS is integrated into new provisioning and placement workflows to automate and simplify provisioning, placement and management of workloads in NetApp ONTAP environments. Headroom provides visibility into available performance capacity, so an SLA-based workload with known performance levels can be provisioned "right-the first-time" in the cluster. This is extremely important to know, before provisioning a business critical workload with SLAs for performance "guarantees" Headroom and QoS controls work hand-in-hand in easing the pain of the storage admin, while managing the performance requirements of business critical workloads in a shared storage environment. QoS and Headroom are supported, automated and simplified in workflows and features of management tools such as SM, OPM, WFA and SLM.

The NetApp Docker Volume Plugin continues to gain momentum as the application deployment mechanism of choice for cloud-native and next-generation applications. Containers decouple the application from the operating system, but they don’t change the need for persistence and ongoing resource management. This session describes how containers work, explores next-generation application architectures, and why storage continues to play a critical role across application packaging mechanisms. Learn how NetApp data management capabilities allow application administrators to leverage containers to their fullest extent while minimizing the burden on infrastructure administrators.

FabricPool is a new NetApp ONTAP feature that enables automated tiering of cold, inactive data to low-cost object storage tiers—either on or off premises. FabricPool is transparent to applications and allows enterprises to take advantage of cloud economics without sacrificing performance or having to rearchitect solutions to leverage storage efficiency. This session provides a deep dive into how you can use FabricPool’s composite aggregates to reduce storage footprints and save money. Sample architectures and real word examples of FabricPools will be showcased.

How NVMe and Storage-Class Memory Are Reshaping the Storage Industry

Al-flash storage arrays based on NAND flash media deliver superb and consistent performance. In addition, advances in flash technology and data reduction capabilities extend the applications that can benefit from using solid-state storage. Two emerging technologies—nonvolatile memory express (NVMe) interfaces and storage-class memory (SCM)—will offer another dramatic improvement in performance and deployment opportunities. We will begin the session by explaining how modern computer systems speak to remote disks, and how and why we used the SCSI protocol for as many years as we did; then explain how these technologies are crippling modern storage media (SSD and SCM). We will explain NVMe and how it is designed for modern media. We will compare performance details and general I/O handling. From here, we will explore how this technology is being used today by NetApp, followed by an explanation of NVMe over data fabrics and how it could radically change storage architectures beyond simple speeds and feeds. You'll learn what these technologies are about, the benefits they offer and what you can and should do to prepare to adopt and take advantage of them.
